ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
In late December 2026, I will lead an all-new fourteen-day, fly-in, fly-out expedition to Antarctica to photograph this incredible white continent's otherworldly landscapes and wildlife. This expedition will be limited to just ten participants, making it one of the smallest and most intimate expeditions offered in Antarctica. The fourteen days are all spent in the ice, with the icebergs, the whales, and the penguins. There are no days at sea crossing the Drake Passage.
Perhaps best of all, for this expedition, we will fly from Punta Arenas in Chile, South America, to King George Island in Antarctica, avoiding the notorious and fearsome Drake Passage. We will then spend fourteen days in Antarctica aboard our expedition vessel, 'Hans Hansson,' before our return flight from King George Island back to Punta Arenas. Our expedition ship is small, meaning we can enter coves, bays, and inlets that other ships cannot explore, and with our small group size of just ten photographers, you will enjoy Antarctica free from tourists. We will make landings in the early morning and late evening during the best light of the day to ensure you come away with the best possible portfolio of photographs from this amazing continent.
Antarctica is miraculous—a remote, white continent of stark and beautiful desolation. For Nature photographers, Antarctica is undoubtedly the gold standard against which all other photography destinations are measured. Nowhere else on earth offers such incredible landscapes and wildlife in such a pristine and remote environment. We have timed our expedition to provide the best possible chance for fantastic icebergs and great light. We will have a white Christmas in Antarctica!
We invite you to join us on a 14 days (13 nights) photography expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula in December 2026. Get ready for the ultimate White Christmas in Antarctica Expedition!

Expedition Ship: Our expedition ship, Hans Hansson, was specifically built to withstand challenging weather. She started her career as a lifesaving vessel in Norway, was then purchased by Sweden, and has now transitioned to taking passengers to the fantastic corners of the world. Her hull – designed to withstand the waters of the infamous North Sea, is perfectly suited for exploring Antarctica. Hans Hansson is an amazing platform to watch whales and icebergs – taking amazing photos. She is also small and maneuverable enough to get into smaller places. Hans Hansson is 26.m long, and she can take up to 12 passengers.
EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS
- 13-night private charter of M/V Hans Hansson, one of the very few capable charter vessels in Antarctic waters suitable for private small-group exploration. It’s exceptionally rare to have this much time in Antarctica with such a small number of participants without sailing across the Drake Passage.
- Small group size, limited to no more than 10 guests.
- Includes round-trip flights over the Drake Passage aboard a BAE 146 jet airliner. Flight duration is approximately two hours, which, compared to crossing the Drake by ship, gives us an extra four days in Antarctica, vastly reduces the potential for seasickness, and increases general safety. It also maximizes our time in Antarctica.
- Frequent landings at penguin colonies and our favourite locations to make the most of photographic opportunities along the coast and on the islands. We will schedule much longer stops than usual when going ashore in order to provide participants with enough time to get excellent pictures. We will be using two zodiac boats to get ashore or when searching for the wildlife at sea.
- Excursions by Zodiac among the icebergs get us close to seals, whales, and scores of penguins “porpoising” through the water. We will frequently hold these early in the morning and late in the evening for the best possible light.
- Generous and personalized photographic instruction throughout by Joshua Holko, including one-on-one guidance and tuition on an as-needed basis.
- Highly experienced, gracious, and accommodating professional captain and crew, with whom we have an excellent working relationship. Family-style meals prepared fresh throughout the day by the Hansson’s chef, accommodating a variety of dietary restrictions.
- Joshua Holko has been leading photographic expeditions in Antarctica since 2009 and is intimately familiar with this territory and the seasonal nuances experienced at this time of the year. He is regarded as the world’s leading Polar Photography expert. In addition to the photography, there will also be informal lectures and post-production sessions during our expedition.
Equipment: Both wide-angle and mid-range zoom lenses are recommended. Long telephoto lenses can also be used to great effect for wildlife.
Application: This workshop is open to all participants.
WORKSHOP ITINERARY
Day One - Start your Antarctic Expedition: Our team will pick you up from your hotel, the timing to be confirmed the day before, and transfer you to the local airport, where you will board our private charter flight to King George Island in the South Shetlands, where our private charter yacht will be waiting for you to start the journey of a lifetime. Please note that the flight to Antarctica is 100% weather and logistics-dependent, and there is no fixed time for departure.
Day two - Day Thirteen - Photograph Antarctica: Explore Antarctica on our private Expedition boat. Each day will be different and may include zodiac tours, landings at penguin colonies, exploring historic locations and whaling sites, and lots of photography. We will make landings in the early morning and late evening to take advantage of the best light of the day. The flexibility allows you to take full advantage of whatever Antarctica gives us– an incredible southern sunset or a breaching whale. We can stop and enjoy – not just once, but every time.
Day Fourtreen - Return to Punta Arenas: Return to King George Island and board your return private charter flight to Punta Arenas. Look out your window and get a last glimpse at the white continent. Punta Arenas felt like the end of the world when you left, and now it feels like a buzzing metropolis after two weeks of serenity in Antarctica.
Weather in Antarctica: The weather in Antarctica can be fickle. We reserve the right to make last-minute changes to the itinerary to avoid bad weather and take advantage of good weather and light as the conditions permit. All efforts will be made to ensure we experience the maximum amount of time for photography in the best possible light.
Why Travel to Antarctica With Us?
- Unlike most tourist cruises to Antarctica, where you share space with regular travellers, our expedition is a full charter dedicated to providing the best possible photographic experience for all aboard. You will be sharing the expedition only with dedicated and passionate photographers.
- Our expedition uses an ice-hardened ship limited to a small group of just ten photographers. IATTO restrictions rigorously enforce the number of visitors to Antarctica. With only ten photographers, you will not miss any opportunity or suffer any landing restrictions due to large passenger numbers.
- Our expedition has been timed early in the season to provide the best opportunities for great light and fantastic icebergs.
- Photography is our primary focus and concern on our expedition (after safety). Our catering staff understands our requirement to work when the light is at its best. Our meal times are flexible and not controlled to ensure we maximize all opportunities.
- Our program is 100% tailored towards photography. The photography guide leaders Joshua Holko and his team are all full-time professional Nature photographers who specialize in Polar Photography and who have a combined total of well over twelve seasons of experience and more than twenty-four expeditions to Antarctica.
