ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
In 2026, I will lead an expedition to photograph the incredible icebergs and landscapes on the remote East Coast of Greenland. Greenland is an incredible place to inspire the imagination and fuel your photographic desires. Home to some of the most extraordinary geology to be found on earth, the red and orange glacial scarred landscape of Greenland stands in stark contrast to the electric blue icebergs that carve off its many glaciers and drift slowly down its spectacular fjords. It is a remote land of untamed and unbridled beauty that is rarely visited and even less rarely photographed. The landscape and geology of the East Coast of Greenland are both stunning and extraordinary. Photographing this incredible landscape under soft golden Arctic light will be our main objective. We will also see and photograph incredible castellated icebergs that have calved off the many glaciers of Greenland. Dramatic glaciers, plunging cliffs and beautiful drift ice formations will also be present. We intend to fly from Iceland to the remote East Coast of Greenland, where we will be based for the duration of this expedition. We will make day trips on our expedition boat and spend our time exploring and photographing some of the world's largest and most spectacular icebergs. If you are excited about travelling to the remote East Coast of Greenland with a small group of dedicated photographers, now is the time to register your place by using the Register Online link at the bottom of this page. Places are very limited, and once they are spoken for, that's it.

Accommodation: We will be based in southeastern Greenland for this workshop and will stay in a local hotel in the small town of Tasiilak. Temperatures at this time of year will hover between 0º and -15º Celsius + wind chill. The hotel is heated and usually kept around +20º Celsius making it a warm comfortable base for our daily excursions. WiFi is available at the hotel. Breakfast and dinner will generally be at the hotel, but lunch will be in the field most days.
Dietary Requirements: If you have special dietary requirements, we will do our best to accommodate you. Please just be sure to let us know when you make your booking.
Travel: We will make daily excursions via a private charter boat from our hotel. This will enable us to operate in the best light of the day and set our itinerary based on the prevailing weather.
Equipment: Both wide-angle and mid-range zoom lenses are recommended. A tripod is also recommended if you wish to take advantage of the lack of light pollution and the clear night sky for Astro photography. There is also an excellent chance for Northern lights photography.
Application: This workshop is open to all participants.
WORKSHOP ITINERARY
All participants will fly into Kulusuk, Greenland, from Reykjavik, Iceland. Upon arrival, you will be transported by helicopter and/or boat to our hotel in Tasiilak. Tasiilak is beautifully located in its own little bay, surrounded by majestic mountains. The harbour is protected from the natural elements and is usually open to ships/boats from July through September. For the rest of the year, sea ice and icebergs create obstacles to passage. There is some excellent hiking in the near vicinity, with majestic peaks piercing the skyline and clear ice-cold lakes.
If you are excited by the idea of travelling to the south-east Coast of Greenland to photograph the incredible landscapes of this country with a small group of dedicated and passionate photographers you are most welcome to join us.
Daily adventures abound, and weather permitting, we will sail to the magnificent Knud Rasmussen Glacier in Sermiligaaq fjord and go ashore at the deserted American WW2 airbase called Ikateq. Here, there is plenty of opportunity to get a closer look at abandoned trucks, buildings and oil drums, while icebergs offer a perfect back drop. We will also sail between icebergs and ice floes as we make a trip to the Apusiaajik glacier. We also intend to visit the Inuit settlements of Kummiut, Osortoq and Semiligaq. There will be times when we are in the open sea as we sail into different fjord systems. Safety briefings will be held prior to boarding our boat, including the use of a life jacket and survival equipment.
Our intention is to begin photographing as soon as possible after everyone has arrived and settled into our hotel. We will spend the next few days exploring and photographing the incredible land/sea scapes and icebergs in this remote and beautiful region. At this time of the year, there is likely to be stunning morning frosts, the first sea ice and beautiful soft pink light - an absolutely ideal combination for photography in this spectacular region of Greenland. There is also an excellent chance we will be dazzled by the Aurora Borealis, too…truly an epic phenomenon.
Meals consist of breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner held at regular times. However, photography is a priority on this expedition, and flexibility is necessary. At the conclusion of our adventure, you will be transported back to Kulusuk either by helicopter or boat in time for your return flight to Reykjavik, Iceland.
Joshua Holko has been leading photographic expeditions in Greenlands fjord systems since 2009 and is intimately familiar with this territory and the seasonal nuances experienced at this time of year. In addition to the photography, there will also be informal lectures and post-production sessions during our expedition.
Weather in Greenland: The weather in the Arctic can be fickle. We reserve the right to make last-minute changes to the itinerary to avoid bad weather and take advantage of good weather and light as the conditions permit. All efforts will be made to ensure we experience the maximum amount of time for photography in the best possible light. We strongly recommend you allow a minimum of two days after our expedition in case we are delayed on our return.
Flights to Iceland: Keflavik International Airport is a major hub in Iceland, and there are daily flights with multiple carriers. We recommend arriving in Iceland on the 1st of October or before in case of bad weather delays or lost luggage.
Flights to Greenland: The return flights from Iceland to Greenland will be booked on your behalf and invoiced separately.
